2024: A Year in Review

Tis’ the season for annual newsletters

I know I’m playing into the well-worn marketing trope of year-end summaries–– but if you’re curious about what I’ve been up to over the past twelve months, this is the place to be.

I published my first article in White Hot Magazine this October, featuring a conversation with Lena Ruth Schwartz and Defne Tutus of Tempest Gallery. I was so enchanted by the hand-knitted garments suspended from the ceiling at The New Body, I needed an excuse to get Lena and Defne to talk with me about it at length. Perhaps they have done so without the article bit–– but now we have an archive of this magic recorded for posterity.

Schwartz’s exhibition, The New Body, showcases her hand-crocheted garments which blur the boundaries between sculpture, wearable art, and textile. Curated by Defne Tutus and Chris Baker, the works explore themes of chronic pain, healing, and corporeal presence, inviting viewers to connect with the work on an emotional level. Definitely worth a read, so check it out here.

Immaterial Projects

Immaterial Projects, the curatorial group I co-founded with five friends in 2023, had an incredible year too.

In May we hosted Ritual/Reverence which featured over 17 artists from across New York. Each piece explored the implications of ritual in daily life and artmaking through a variety of visual approaches. The highlight was meeting so many new artists through the open call, which expanded and strengthened our creative community like never before.

This October, we launched our third exhibition, Visions & Revisions, at Studio 9D in Chelsea. I had the pleasure of moderating the closing talk with featured artists Adina Andrus, Liu Kincheloe, and Linda Sok.

We’re already in the early stages of planning our next show for 2025! If you’re interested in applying—or know someone who might be—join IP’s email list to stay in the loop.

Make Art Every Day

When I wasn’t working my day job or putting together one of these curatorial projects, I managed to launch my first product: Studio Calendars. After years of creating my own tools to track time in the studio, I wanted to share this resource with our wider creative community, described in a recent post. I’m so genuinely eager to hear how people use the calendars to stay inspired—and to see the amazing work they create by this time next year.

If you’d like to get a Studio Calendar for yourself or a loved one, there’s still time before the end of the year! Use the discount code FREESHIP24 for free standard shipping, and we’ll make it happen.

Speaking Engagements

To close out 2024, I moderated an artist talk with Jacob Olmedo for his solo exhibition The Softness of Moonlight, The Strength of the Sun at Tempest Gallery in December. The recorded conversation is now available on Youtube.

Youtube, people!

Turns out my asymmetrical outfit is matching Jacob’s artwork in this picture. Totally unintentional, but I’m here for it. Taken at Tempest in December 2024.

Up next in 2025

We’re almost there, guys! Looking ahead, January is shaping up to be an exciting month too.

My year in The Canopy Program culminates in a group show in Chelsea, where I’ll exhibit a new painting I’ve been working on for nearly a year.

Join us for the opening on Thursday January 16, 2025 from 6-8pm at 508 West 26th Street #6E, New York, NY.

I’ll also be hosting the artist talk for Witchgrass, a group show currently on view at Tempest Gallery. The exhibition features work by Yasmeen Abdallah, Amy Greco, Rose Malenfant, Taraneh Mosadegh, and Defne Tutus.

Join us for the lively discussion on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 3-4pm at Tempest Gallery, 1642 Weirfield Street, Ridgewood, Queens.

Finally, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my community, my family, and everyone who took the time to read this newsletter. You Are Amazing!

Happy Solstice y’all, can’t wait to see what we create in 2025! ✶
